Frequently Asked Questions for EMDR Therapy Indianapolis
-
EMDR stands for: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. With EMDR you will use bilateral stimulation (like eye movements) to help the brain process and adapt as you work through memories of trauma, with the goal being healing and moving on. EMDR is comprised of eight phases, which are personalized and paced for your safety. We'll spend some time in earlier phases, building tools for grounding and calming in preparation before revisiting traumatic events. Ultimately we're aiming to reduce or eliminate symptoms of PTSD and other trauma-related disorders.

For treatment of a single trauma incident, contained EMDR treatment may occur 1-2 times weekly (depending on severity and need), and can require approximately 8-12 sessions.
The frequency and total number of sessions will vary based on the complexity of your trauma and your unique needs. EMDR is a an adaptable treatment modality, and together we can determine the extent of your treatment. Remember, you are in control of your therapy journey, and I encourage you to ask questions and communicate your concerns and ideas throughout treatment.

EMDR is covered under most insurance plans for both in network and out of network (utilizing a superbill). Due to the in-depth nature of this treatment, I typically conduct 60 minute EMDR sessions.
Be sure to contact your insurance company to verify the details of how EMDR is covered under your plan. It may be helpful to ask if your plan covers CPT codes 90834 (45 minute psychotherapy sessions) and/or 90837 (60+ minute psychotherapy sessions) for EMDR.
For those interested in private pay, I am able to offer additional extended sessions for 1 1/2 hours (not an option provided by insurance companies at this time.)

Absolutely! I am trained in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Motivational Interviewing as well. I frequently draw from each of these evidence based modalities with each client as the need arises.
I often work with clients who don't require the use of EMDR sessions. I tailor my skillset to meet your needs.
Please ask if you have any specific questions about my approach. I’m always happy to provide more specifics.

No. While EMDR and hypnosis both often utilize eye movement in practice, this is where the similarities end.
When engaging in EMDR treatment, eye movement is simply one way of creating "dual attention" while someone is processing their trauma. The eye movement seems to be just distracting and even calming enough to enable a client to more clearly process and move past the traumatic memory.
I'm not trained in hypnosis, and do not use it in my practice.
